Received October 18, 8.44 a.m. LONDON, October 17. Lord Lansdowne, in the middle of June, verbally informed Count Metternich, German Ambassador, that Britain would actively support France if Germany provoked a Franco-German war. He 'added that he did not anticipate any aggression, a*id the statement only applied to an improbable eventuality.
