TURF TALK.

(BY "MULTIFORM.")

The New ■Plymouth representative for the 'Ne'yyJ Zealand Cnp^iMr.. J. George's Paritutu, is reported to bj looking fit and well, and will be taken ;<ou*to Eiccdrton at an early date. '' Flyingl.Spark founHHsome local sup;;portfcrs for the Kaikouri Hack Race at ■Bune'cKn on Saturday, and his dividend <£6 18s-.) came Ss an agreeable surprise to several locals'punters, who followed the; gelding'on'the strength of his runxtiiig in the Hack Handicap on the first day of the C.J.C. National Meeting. In this event a field of seventeen faced the starter. Flying Spark had no less than £595 invested on his chance on fSfae machine. He was slow off the

and was also lame, yet he managed to run into third place behind Jolly Friar and Stepaside. In Saturday's event he was making his second appearance under silk.. The Fiske—Satellite -gelding, Kuioki, has won each of the last threw raoes for which he has started, despite heavy itr.gposts, and it is evident that he is a great weight-carrier. His wins have always been popular with the public, as he is always "on business bent" vhen the winning post hoves into view- -~ ~ -~ As we are now within measurable distance of the New Zealand Cup deciding day, and the form of the most fancied candidates has been more or less exDOsed by recent running, tur£ scribes shortly be putting on their considering cups, with a view to elu cidating the problem. After a careful analysis of the handicaps and recentlyearned penalties, I am of opinion that the winner is concealed among the following eight:—Siingoi, Noctuiform, l'aritutu, Mystification, Gold Crown, Armistice, Douche, and Boomerang. At the outset, I may say that nothing would surprise ms less than to see Mr. Stead unrepresented on the day. He is not by any means fond of submitting his horses to the severe tests of long journeys in big handicaps and under stiff imposts. He has more than once emphasised the fact that in his opinion Nightfall is nob a brilliant mare, and this being so, he may not submit her to the ordeal. Either Sungod or Noctuiform may be started, though it is rumoured that Noctuiform in ay ba reserved for the Derby. Melodeon has run like a stayer in all his recent races, but I do not expect him to improve on his last year's running. Achilles and Mabutonga, good as they are, will probably find their turdens too crashing. Bulawayo may not stand the winding up necessary for such an event. Quarryman is a big horse that is always more or less sore, and is difficult to get quite right, and he is scarcely worthy of trust in a race of this description. Paritutu lias been going on thu right way sine? racing at Wanganui, and if brought fit and well to the post he would bo very difficult to beat. Gold Crown has alvays run like a stayer, and has always been running on at the end of his Alices over a distance, even when carrying heavy imposts. If he survives the necessary preparation, and is landed at the post in his best form he is bound to run prominently. Douche a relative of Tirant d'Eau, may not find it beyond her to repeat that horse's Cup performances. The progeny of Jet d'Eau all seem to possess staying ability, and the full s'ster to Hydrant appears to be specially gifted in this respect. The way she cut

clown Molodeoii, Mahutonga, and co. in tho Racing Club Handicap at Napier Park suggests that she could get a much longer journey, and with her light impost she may ba "knocking at tho door" at the finish. Armistice has n good dash cf pace, and at the recent Wanganui meeting she showed that she could finish Avell OA^er a distance, and Avith only 6.9 on her back she is a' possibility. Boomerang, although he has shoAvn fair average ability in his recent essays, should bo held safe by Douche, Mystification, and Gold Crown. The Dunedin-OAA'ned Apollodoris has developed racing talent during th© past weclf or tAA-o, and may have to be taken into account at the last moment. Others that may come Avith a rattle into the betting at the last moment arc* Black Reynard and St. Joe. The twe Sou'-Wester's—Flamen and King's Birthday—l do not like over a twomile course. Of the eight selected, I prefer Gold Crown, Paritutu, Douche, Mystification, and Stead's elect. A further payment for the race is due on Friday night, but if asked to fine tho issue doAvn still further at this early stage, I AA'ould take Gold CroAvu and Paritutu.
