Money of this loan now in Bank to your credit. Contract on Hall read is ready for tenders. Specifications for earth work and a, small bridge of 12-foot span is ready. The rate-book has been carefully gone through and signed. The valuation rolls from Wellington are in a dreadful state, but can be rectified by local members dividing them into their several ridings, as has been done. Gentlemen, as I join the Resident Engineer now as early as possible, on the Main Trunk Railway, I must thank tho Chairman for his kind and courteous assistance at all times, as he has many times gone to great trouble in coming here from his place in all weathers when he-knew his signature was required. I must also thank the members one and all for their assistai.ee, at times giving me information (local) about any roads or works in their different districts; also the treasurer (Mr. Parker) for his kind' assistance at times. During my twelve months here the "district. . has forged.;ahead, and I hate' no doubt wijl' do so even more rapidly this coming year, as large votes have been made by the j Government in this large district. As I will ba resident, at Ohaknne fov t some time, I will"Tpe most happy to givo you any assistance I can, or advise on any works proposed, should you deem my opinion of any use. You will require to appoint a returning officer at once, as the duties of this officer will commence at once. As the new election will require immediate attention, I trust a good Council (although I do not know whether a better one cfcn be elected than the present) will be elected on the Bth November.
