The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following ~ . cablegram from the High Commission- ' ~ er, dated London,- 14th instant:— There is dull sale for all qualities of '\' muttony and an inclination to force- \ sales. Tho average prioa to-day, for Canterbury mutton is 3|d per. Jb., ior Dunedin, Southland, and Wellington \' Meat Export Company's 3 5-8 d -per* lb., for other North Island 3 '3-8 d per lm., for River Plate 3£4<i per lb. The lamb market is weak,-inactive:; and unsettled. The average price today for New Zealand lanib, (Canterbury brand) is 4<£d" per, lb., for brands other than Canterbury 4 l-Bd'per lb. There is a better demand for beef. Tho average price to-day for hindquarters of New Zealand beef is 3 3-8 d per lb. to 3^d per lb., fore-quarters of New Zealand beef 2£d per lb to 2 5-8 d per lb.

The butter market is firm,; .but the demand is only moderate owing to the high price. Danish 1235, Australian llsy Canadian 109s, Siberian ]05s. Canadian cheese on spot 57s to 58s per cwt, c.i.f. Tho market is steady at tho advance.

Prices have slightly declined for all grades of hemp 2 «md the market closed rather quiet. The price of New Zealand hemp, good fair Wellington grade, on spot, to-day, per ton, is £30 10s to £31; October to December shipments, £30 10s to £31; the price of Manila hemp, "fair current" grade, on spot to-day, per ton, is £39 to £39 10s. There is. scarcely any demand fo# cocksfoot seed, and quotations are nominal. The average price for bright, clean New Zealand cocksfoot seed, weighing 17 lbs. per bushel, on spot, to-day, is 51s per cwt. to 52s per cwt. Current Bradford quotations for tops are 365, low crossbreds Is 4d per Ib.; 40's, low crossbred, Is 51<! per lb.} 44's, medium crossbreds, Is 6^d par lb.; 50's, halfbreds, Is 6{d per lb.; 56's, quarter breds, Is ll|d per lb.; &o's, merinos, 2s 3d per lb. Prices are firm.
