WELLINGTON, October 16. Judgment has been -reserved in th© f±ankms case before the Appeal Court. J. H. Hankins, solicitor, was recently ianvaa-ded £450 damages by a jury at merston North for injuries reflßved by his buggy overturning on a railway crossing an that town. It was claimed that the Department had, under the Railways Act of 1900, to maintain the street for 33ft. from the centre of the rails, and ft was alleged that.it failed to do so, and the rails projecting above the street caused the accident. The Crown is now applying for a new trial, and for a change of venue to Wellington, and in .addition questions of law ■ar© being argued, all before the Court of Appeal.

DUNEDIN, October 16. A country man named Thomas William Dawson was sentenced to three months at the Police Court for assaulting a woman and her daughter. He had taken some drink, and was shopping with the daughter when some dispute arose over money matters, and ho struck the daughter. The mothei tried to interfere and ' was knocked down. She had to be taken to the hospital to have her injuries attended. Steps are being taken by the Protest-1 ant Defence Association to celebrate the tercentenary of the frustration of tho * Gunpowder Plot.
