The bye-election for the vacancy in the Barkston Ash Division of Yorkshire, caused by the death of Colonel Sir Robert Gunter, resulted in the return of Andrews (Liberal), who polled 4376 votes against Lamefox's (Tory) 4143.
Lord Ripon, speaking at Liverpool, declared that the projected Colonial Conference was a scandalous attempt to use the colonial (representatives for electioneering purposes; but what would happen if the "redoubtable Mr Sedddn, was found dancing on the stomachs of the 'Government on the subject of Chinese labour. v
The Yorkshire woolcombers are complaining .of the amount of vegetable matters, such as cotton and bits of bagging, which are being found in Australian wocils, especially scoured wools. Sir Edward Grey, in a speech at Manchester, said that if the Liberals were returned to office they would not enter into engagements inconsistent with or prejudicial to <tlie Anglo-Japanese Treaty of the entente with France.
