"THE MAN ON THE LOOK-OUT AND THE P.O. OFFICIALS.

To the Editor

Sir, —Just a line or two in reply to our facetious friend, *' The Man on the Look-out," in yesterday's "Chronicle " Supplement. I said in my letter

' 'last week—" I have nothing to say about the Telegraph Department (this includes, of course, the Telephone service), which is -en quite a different footj ing." 'My point was that it is " unreai sonable to expect the Money-order and | Saving? Bank branches of the P.O. to Ibe kept open until 5 p.m., the same as th-o letter delivery an/I inquiry branches." To this I adhere, because the banks close to their customers, as regards the paying in and drawing out of money, at 3 p.m. —on • Saturdays at 12 noon; therefore, why should the P.O. officials be compelled to 'receive and pay out money for money-orders and into and out of the Saving Bank after 4 p.m. and up to 5 and even 6 p.m., as our exacting friend and censor suggests? It is most unreasonable—l will use a stronger expression, monstrous, simply! The suggestion also about re-arranging, or so arranging, the staff of the P.O. as not to make it oppressive for the officials. i,s ridiculous and not worth while discuss;;ng. With the present shorthanded staff at disposal, I don't think it could be done. I hope, therefore, that the P.O. authorities will " let well alone" and pay no attention to our facetious causer's demands in this regard. I will close this second letter on above subject by remarking that I have been warmly complimented all round on my letter of the Bth inst., and as regards those mosit affected, the P.O. officials, I liave good reason for knowing that they not only quite endorse all I wrote last week, but they also feel grateful for same. " Quantum sufficit." —I am, etc., JAS. GARLAND WOON. Campbell Street, Oct. loth, 1905.
