The gentleman who yesterday left his umbrella on the Show grounds can obtai the same on application to the secretary of the Association.

Hyland’s Circus Company concluded their Wanganui season last evening, to a large and appreciative audience. The clever horses, which are many in number and particularly well trained animals, were especially admired. The company appear at Waverley this evening. Mr W. T. Stead’s son is at present in Melbourne. He has come out from England fro the purpose of reorganising the staff of the “Review of Reviews for Aus tralasia.” Dr. Fitchett will cease to edit and publish the magazine at the end of the year ; it will, however, continue to appear as heretofore, but under new editorship, and with considerable improvements.

On Wednesday evening Mr Robert Neilson chairman of the Wanganui County Council, who had been in communication for some weeks with the Government on the subject, applied to the Premier for a grant for the temporary repairs to Shakespeare’s Cliff. Mr Seddon replied that he would grant the request.

The ship Cimba, when leaving Liverpool for Sydney collided with a hopper vessel and returned to port. She will probably have to discharge part of her cargo.

At the Wanganui district Synod at Feilding this week the Rev. Haddon, native minister, was recommended to full connexion. Revs. Eaton and Patchett were recommended for passing in their respective years. Between £400 and £500 has been raised in the district for the Home Mission Fund.

The motor waggon, which was purchased for the Napier-Taradale passenger traffic, at a cost of £1500, has been sold to a Hawke’s Bay wool and skin merchant for £800, and is now plying between Clive and Napier. The waggon carries 18 bales of wool, and makes two trips daily.

As a result of the passage of the Preferential Trade Act importers are being notified by the Customs Department that goods mentioned in the second and third schedules of the Act can only escape the extra duty through having been ordered prior to November 10. Importers are required to furnish proof of order when passing entries.

A cable from Sydney states that there is a heat wave over the greater part of the State, and 95 degrees in the shade was registered at Sydney. Twenty stations registered 100 and over, Mount Hope reaching 107. Coincident with the caterpillar visitation, myriads of large white and coloured butterflies have appeared in the coastal districts.

The annual meeting of the Waitotara County Council was held at noon on Wednesday, when there were present — Messrs. Ritchie, Harper, Walker, and Mann. Cr. Ritchie was re-elected chairman, on the motion of Cr. Harper, seconded by Cr. Mann. Messrs. W. Ritchie and J. Dempsey were elected to represent the Council on the Hospital and Charitable Aid Boards for the ensuing year.

The Taylor-Carrington Company concluded their four-night season last night with a performance of “The Mystery of a Hansom Cab.” This is a dramatisation of Fergus Hume’s popular novel of that name, and was thoroughly appreciated by the large audience present, who signified their approval by frequent outbursts of applause. The acting and mounting was up to the company’s usual standard, which is a very high one and ensures for the combination a warm welcome whenever they may return to Wanganui.

The great popularity of incandescent gas mantles is indicated by the fact that no fewer than 325,000,000 are made each year. Of this total, according to the “Gas World,” 150,000,000 — of which onesixth are exported to Great Britain — are produced in Germany, where the manufacture originated. In the United States the production is 100,000,000, in Austria-Hungary 50,000,000, and in England and France 25,000,000 each. In England the homes production and consumption are rapidly increasing.
