It also provided that for all 1 lands leased from the Crown the rate* 3 able value should be the annual rent * capitalised at 6 per cent ; the Under* Secretary forwarded a oopy of the of- * ficial circular of the Centennial Inter* 3 national Exhibition to be held in Mel* bonne next year; a circular was re- » ceived from the Lake County Council re & the liability of members of County " Councils for moneye illegally spent, and r askiug the co-operation of this council c in making "The •' ounlies Act, 1886," 0 retrospective. (On the motoin of the • H Chairman, it was resolved that a reply '> be sent, That in the opinion of this ; > council it would not ba desirable to * remove thoee safeguards provided by ■' the act for the protection of local bodioa' tunds). The outward correspondence was read and approved of. l > Bepout — The Foreman's report for '' the month referred chiefly to the repairs c made by him to roads, bridges, and c culverts' in the county. — Cr Perry called '" the attention of the council to the faot a that the foreman always took up the * rubble culverts;- notwithstanding that r they worked well, and put down timber ? oulverts. — The Foreman dcuied it, and • r aaid that after every shower of rain the D rubble oulverts were blooked, and they ci could not have the men going up the V road to clear them out whenever it n rained. — Keporl; adopted, t Toll Gate— The Chairman drew the c attention of the council to the faot that *■ the WaDganui County Council had not P repaired their bridge on the Biver Bank S fioad, and consequently all the traffic c was thrown on to the Waitotara 1 County's road, without other bodies a contributing anything at all towards B the keeping of the road in repair. The * council received nothing from the ferry, 0 and it would be only right that other 5 bodies should contribute towards the r road. He moved, That in view of the 3 large amount of traffic thrown on the ■ Biver Bank Koad by the inability of the * Wauganui County Council and several c Road Boards to repair their bridges and : keep their Biver Bank Boad opeD, this Council instruot the secretary to 1 tako the necessary steps to empower thia ' coauoil to put a toll gate on the Biver [ Bank Koad, at the Upokongaro Ferry. 1 — Seconded by Cr Bitohie, and carried. Accounts— A number of accounts 1 were passed for payment.
