London, November* Obituary— Alfred Domett, 0.M.G., ex- Premier of New Zealand, aged 76 yeara. p , , h Alfred Domett, 0.M.G., eon of Mr c Nathaniel Domett, was born at Camber* 2 well Grove, Surrey, on the 20th May, 1; 1811, He was educated at Cambridge, and after travelling in America and ou * the Continent, he was called to the Bar at the Middle Temple in 1841. Having . purchased some land from the New * Zealand Company, he came to the £ oolony amongst the earliest settlers in £ 1842. On the introduction of the new . Constitution in 1848, Mr Domett was I appointed Golonial Secretary for the { province of New Munster, and in 1861 ( he became Seoretary for the whole of ' New Zealand. Later on he resigned , l both these offices and aooepted the ap- j point-dent of Commissioner of Crown ' Lands and Resident Magistrate of ■ Hawke's Bay, Entering the Houso as y ! representative oi Nelson, he formed a J I Government in 1862, when the affairs of c the colony were in a most oritioal c i position. After his Government re- J 1 signed, he was appointed Seoretary for * I Crown Lands, with a seat in the Legis- j I lative Council. In 1865 he became j Begistrar-General of Land, and in 1870 i he was requested to undertake the ad- j | ministration of confiscated lands, but in [ the following year he retired from pub- ' lie life and returned to England. For ' the signal service rendered by him to. ' the oolony he was created a C.M.G. in 1880. In 1872 Mr Domett published ' "Banolfand Amohia: a South Sea ] Daydream," a poem desoriptive of New Zealand and of the habits, legends, and ' character of the natives, which was favourably otiticised by Browning, Tennyson, and Longfellow, and by the ' Spectator, Examiner, and Illustrated London IN ews. Mr Domett also published several literary works of minor importance. "
