PBB UNITED PEESS ASSOOIATIONt Wellington, November 4 The Council met at 2.80 p.m. Seventy^ two petitions were presented in favour of Bible reading in State schools. Sir Frederick Whitaker, replying to the Hon Mr Taiaroa, said that the Goo verntnent declined to bring in a bill during the present session enabling the property of natives dying intestate to be disposed of for the benefit of the creditors. Sir Frederick Whitaker gave notice to move on Tueeday next, That, in the evout of a reduction of the number of members in the House of Eepresenta» tives, the number of members in the Council should be reduced in the same proportion and thereafter maintained, and that the matter be referred to a Select Committee to report aa to the beet plan to carry out the reduction. Mr^Menziea' motion, to continue the practice of indicating by an asterisk the authorised reports of speeches in the Council, was lost, on a division, by 13 to 17. The Hammond Fencing Gompensa* tion Bill waa read a second time, and referred to the Waste Landß Committee. The Council, at 4 o'clock, adjourned until Tuesday.
