LOCAL AND GENERAL.
At a special meeting of the Fire Brigade last night, it was decided to send a team to the competition at Christchurch. We regret to hear that a 4-year-old son of Mr James Peat, of Waverley, was badly scalded on Monday last. At the Police Court yesterday, Lars Hanson was charged with disobeying a lawful order of a prison officer, and making use of abusive language when spoken to. The offence was proved by a prison officer. The court ordered that prisoner be kept on bread and water for four days. Messrs Krull and Jones J.P.'s, were on the bench. The San Francisco mail closes to day, at 12.30 p.m. The election of Mr W. C. Buchanan, for Wairarapa, is to be petitioned against on the ground, of bribery and corruption. — Daily Times. The usual weekly meeting of the Southern Star Lodge, I.O.G.T., was held last night, Bro Collingwood, W.C.T., in the chair. There was a large attendance of members. Two candidates were initiated into the Lodge, and several were proposed for membership. The following officers were installed for the ensuing quarter: — Chief Templar, Bro Arthur ; Vice-Templar, Bro Mancer ; secretary, Bro Newman ; assis-tant-secretary, Bro Ellis ; financial secretary, Sister Tyler ; marshal, Bro Halthom ; deputy-marshal, Sister Johnstone ; chaplain, Sister Robb ; treasurer, Bro Robb ; inside guard, Bro Silby ; outside guard, Bro Wilkinson. The Rev J. Treadwell will preach at the Fordell Church on Sunday next, at 11 p.m. The sacrament of the Lord's supper will be dispensed after the service. Members of the Temperance Brotherhood are reminded that there will be a special meeting at the club at 8 o'clock to-night. Mr H. Naphtali, of Napier, who arrived in town by last night's train, announces that he is a purchaser of New Zealand Bank shares. Mr Naphtali will be found at the Rutland Hotel. A meeting of the committee of the Caledonian Society was held last night, to arrange for the usual annual sports. It was decided that the sports be held on Monday, the 23rd of January next, Anniversary Day falling, on this occasion, on Sunday. Las year's programme was adopted with slight alterations, the principal being the striking out of the "hitch and kick" event, and the substitution of another Highland dance, the "Scheantreus." The sports will commence at 11 a.m. sharp. Mr G. Marshall was appointed starter, Mr H. Black timekeeper, and Mesars Marshall, Boyle, and W. R. O'Hara, handicappers. It was decided to give silver medals to the schools, as formerly. The Heads Railway directors have decided to run experimental trains to and from Castlecliff on Saturday night, Trains will start from the Heads at 7 and 9.30, and from town at 7.30 and 10 o'clock. Mr Marchant, the Commissioner of Crown Lands, is at present in this district, and is expected to be in town to-morrow. We understand that the dramatic performance in aid of the funds of the Garrison Band will be given on Tuesday next, the 8th instant, in the Princess Theatre. Mr Redmond, formerly of the looal telegraph office, is now at Hawera. The Star says of him :— Mr Redmond'a copy in clear, clean, and good, in fact a perfect joy to editors and printers as compared with that turned out by many of the department, whom it would be invidious to name.
