FIRE BRIGADE MEETING.
A meeting of the Fire Brigade was held last eight, Captain (Cummins presiding. Present—Foremen Sharpe, Jleesing, Firemen Townsend, Gopoland, H. Greenwood, 0. Greenwood, Paul, Thompson, Kruse, Olark, Oarrel, Gray, Powell, Jamieson, Spriggens, Banian, West, Kitohen, and Austin, Oaptaia Cummins stated that the meeting had been called mainly to consider the advisability or otherwise of sending a team to the next tournament to be held at Ohristohurch. Brigade Photographs. — Captain Oummins said that at the ordinary meeting it had been decided to have the brigade photograpsd, the men to be taken in their helmets, bat he had brought the matter up again, as he believed some of the men thought di£* ferently on the matter now. The photo- . grapher was of opinion that it would be better to have them taken without aelmets.— Fireman Powell thought thew ihould be takoa with. fcelßMfcn to. coa£
plete the uniform.— Foreman Keesmg said they would come out better if taken without helmets, oe with them alongside.— Foreman Sharpe stated that the Keith-street men had been taken in " *heir helmets, and the photographs had come out as well as they oould have wiflhaa.— Fireman H.Greenwood moved; That the resolution passed at last meet- - ing be reeoinaedi and that tha members be taken without helmets.— Seconded by Fireman Oolley and carried unanimously". _, , . _ aooiAL Gathebikg.— Captain Oummins brought up the matter of the sooial gathering proposed to be held during the month. It was desired that the programme be made up from the brigade only, and asked for members to volunteer to Rive a song or recitation. A number of the members thus offered to take part. The uhristohuroh Touenament,— The question of sending a team to Ohristchuroh. was then discussed. Captain Cummins said that the cost of sending a team would be about J2O, .. and it was for the brigade to deoide whether by bo doing the money would be well spent. He thought it would be a pity if they did not send a team while the association was in existence. The • ; gear used would be the same as that of brigade here, no racing gear being . allowed. — Foreman Eeesing apologised : for the unavoidable absence of Lieut. Spurdle, who he said was averse to sending a team away, as the results had been anything but satisfactory in the pa«t, and it would not do for the brigade to oall on the publio to send them away again, For himself he (Foreman Keesing) was opposed to the proposal, the competitions had not ; been carried on properly in the past, and the men had come home complaining of unfair treatment! New uniforms were •■ .wanted, and they should get them first. -The members' fund was hehind also, the brigade owing them a good deal, and they should, he thought, not incur fresh liabilities, but pay their debts first; ...besides he doubted whether the sum of " £20 would cover expenses. — Fkeman Greenwood was Btrongly in favour of sending a . team. The rules of the association had been re-organised, and the gear used ey all would be similar. They should look to the publio for .the money, and there should ba no difficulty in raising £20 in a town the ; Bize of Wanganui, — Foreman Sharpe thought; if they could get the money they Bhould spend it in the town, and .shbw the townspeople what they could do«~Firen!an Gray was op« posed to sending a team away, — Fireman Connell was in favour if they could raise the money outside of the Fire Brigade, but the brigade should not inour fresh liabilities.— Fireman Oopeland asked whether-— provided the brigade did not send a team— some of the members cnuld go if they paid their own expense b P—Oaptain Cummins was very strongly in favour of sending a team if they oould raise the money outside the brigade: A number of the brigade had been in training -for a time, and when training the team had been closely watched by the other members of the brigade, and it had, he thought, had a very good moral .effect on the members. If the Brigade were not represented at Chris tchur ch, after the efforts the association had made to put things right, it would seem as if they were afraid to take a licking.— Foreman Eeesing proposed, That a team be not sent, but if the, public think otherwise, let them come forward and subscribe the money. He thought that if they got money from ihe people, they Bhould devote it looally and not send a team. They should not look upon it as if they were afraid, as if they did not send a team others would say that they were at least honest. He would rather be honest than be thought plucky and Bolioit money from the townspeople for suoh a purpose. They had not, he thought, benefited at all by the competitions.—The resolution was seconded by Foreman Sharpe. — Fireman Greenwopd moved, as an amendment, That a team be sent to Ohristchuroh. He did not think that the public would come rushing with money to the brigade, but would subscribe if asked. r -He believed that by an entertainment they oould raise sufficient money. They should not take it from the funds of the brigade, —Fireman Oolley seconded the amend-mentf-^Oaptain Cummins thought that ifth"e'yv'flent:a : team.at all, it .should be with the good will of the brigade, and not be the cause of a lot of petty ' wrangling af teirwards.—Foreman Keesing stated that if bia resolution were losli he would do the best lie -could to further the interests of the brigade and assist the team.— The amendment was put and carried by a large n,ajority. Laddke Cakkiagb.— Captain Cummins, " Lieutenant Spurdle, • Foremen Keesing, Sharpe, an 3 Kitchen were appointed to arrange with Mr MoDuff as to the ladder carriage. Garrison Band Fund-— Captain Cummins stated that he had been asked if the brigade would attend in uniform and inarch to the theatrical entertainment to . be given in aid of the band fund, — On the motion of Fireman Gray, it was resolved, That the brigade attend in a body and march to the entertainment.—Foreman Keesing suggested that to ensure the attendance of members, the secretary supply them with tickets, the money to go against their fire money, and a motion to that effect was carriedi New Mbmbee.— Mr A: Daw was proposed as a member by Foreman Kitchen. . The Statioij.- Fireman Powell asked if anyone but a member was allowed to live in the station, — Captain Cummins stated that he had given Fireman Colley permission to have a companion , with him..
