E MELBOURNE • November 2 The Farmers' Conference to-day adopted resolutions urging the impo--1 sition of 25 per cent ad valorem duties upon live Btock and dead meat, and the , placing of protective duties upon agri- . cultural produca generally from beyond | the colony. A deputation from the ! conference will interview the Premier to-morrow, in order to bring the views , of the conference before the Cabinet. A collision ooourred off Williamstown to>day between two launches. Three persons were precipitated into the water, and one person sustained severe injuries. The election of a member of the Assembly for the representation of Williamstown, rendered vacant by the resignation of Mr A. T, Clark, took plaoe yesterday, and resulted in the return of Mr Mirams. The Premier, in reply to a communix cation from Major Atkinson respecting , the proposed cession of the Island of ' Baiatea to Franca, states that the Vie* tariau Government had no previous '. intimation of such a proposal.

Ruapehu. from London. She carries 162 pas« [ sengers for New Zealand ports. Four deaths occurred during the voyage, all i of which resulted from natural causes, i The names of the deceased are — Mrs 1 Ludbrook, Messrs Jacvis and Murdochj > and Seaman Chalkley. The Euapehu enoountered a hurricane which lasted for eight hours, on the Ist ultimo, and 1 experienced violent gales on the sth and 15th. She sailed at 6 this evening for Nfiw Zealand.
