LONDON November 1 The Metropolitan Board of Works forwarded a letter to the unemployed deputation, that the board expresses regret at the condition of the unemployed, but is unable to provide work for them at the present juncture. A gale of extreme violence prevailed throughout England and Ireland today. A large number bf • casualties are reported, and extensive damage to property and great loss of life have occurred. Baron de Lesseps has made an announcement relative to the 'progress of work at the lothmus of Panama. He expects to so far complete the work as to permit of a partial opening of the canal in February, 1890.
