MUNICIPAL CONFERENCE IN WELLINGTON.
POSITION. OF FIRE BRIGADES. PER UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION. Wellington, November 2 The committee of the Municipal Conference appointed to inquire whether it is desirable to have the maintenance of fire brigades and their plant in munioi* palifcies placed on a more satisfactory basis than at present, have reported that they did not see their way to recommend that any action should be taken in the matter at present, but they recommend that with the view of further discussing the subject on a future occasion, information should be obtained from New South Wales and the other Australian colonies as to the working of tbe aots bearing upon the subject. The report was adopted. A motion by Mr Hulbert in favour of a bill indemnifying members of local bodies for expenditure incurred for the benefit of ratepayers, and which the Auditor- General has disallowed, waß carried.
