Wanganui Chronicle. AND PATEA-RANGITIKEI ADVERTISER. "NULLA DIES SINE LINEA." MONDAY, OCTOBER 31, 1887.

The following forecast of the salient features of the Financial Statement, to be delivered to-morrow night, has been telegraphed by press correspondents in Wellington, and is said to have been obtained on good authority :— •' The proposed reductions will rauge from £270,000 to ig300,000, beginning ■with Ministers' salaries. The honorarium will be J6150 for the House of Representßtives, and 50 guineas for the Legislative Council, There is to be no nni» form reduction of civil servants." All departments are to bo reduced by a lump sum, which the Minister concerned is to readjust as he beßt can, making reductions in the higher salaries as they can be effected. Defence suffers heavily, especially the department of external defence. Probably a reorgan* iaation scheme will be prepared during the recess. In education the capitation is reduced by five shillings, and the school age raised to six years. The Crown and Rating Act is to be repealed. The San Francisco service is to remain untouched in the meantime. As defence has overrun the constable by £100,000, and the school buildings fund is exdeeded by <£50,000, and a large amount of deficiency bills outstanding, the Gob " vernment are puzzled as to getting finds, especially as there is an. understanding not to go on the London market for some time. A list of public works will be selected and gone on with from hand to mouth. There will be , large reductions in the Survey Depart- ' merit. The tariff is to remain untouoHed, but in addition to a property tax of Id in the £, some" soheme will probably be suggested for making regular incomes of a given amount yield something, — — — -
