FIRST DATBY ELEOTRIO TELEGRAPH —COPYBIGHT. (Received October 29, 9.60 p..m.) Melbourne, October 28 The first day's races of the Viotorian Eaoing Club's Spring meeting was held at Fletuington to-day. The weather was magnifioent, and consequently there waa a large attendance of the public. Their Excellencies Sir Henry Loch and Lord Oariugton and other vice-regal vit-ibora were present. During the afternoon Admiral Fairfax patronised the meeting. The following are the results of the day's racing :— Melbourne Stakes; one mile and a quarter. Mr Cooper's Silvcrorine 1 Mr Donovan's Dunlop 2 Mr Oaborte'a Algerian 3 A field of six horses faced the starter, Algerian and Trident cut out the running together, and led the field until the straight was entered, when Bilvermine and Dunlop forged ahead. A magnificent Btruggle home ensued, Silvermine beating Dunlop, after a splendid finish, by a neck, with Algerian third, and Trid9nt (very olose up) fourth. Charger and Silver Prince also started, but the latter waa never dangerous. Time. 2mins 13£seo. Hotham Handicap ; one mile and a half and a distance. As the group approached the distance post Lady Betty and Consequence improved their position, and together led the field ; but Lonsdale, coming up on the outside with a great rush, won. after a splendid finish, by a. neok, Oonsesequenoe just beating Lady Betty by a neck for second plaoe: The others — Sylvester, Lord Rosebery, Myvas, Gladstone, Honaymead, and Henira— came in straggling. Mr White's Aberbbrh ... f Mr Cooper's Niagara f A splendid start was effected at the first attempt, Lava, Aberoorn, Pakeha, Trantor, Jebusite getting away first. As the horses filed round the turn Lava was seen to be leading Aberoorn by three lengths; then followed Pakeha, Australian Peer, and Niagara, while Tranter and Jebusite brought up the rear of the field. Lava maintained the lead to the bridge.where she was four lengths ahead of ibercorn, who was closely attended by Enfilade, Tranter, Niagara, and Australian Peer, Jebusite being still last. As they approaohed the sheds Aberqorn ran up to Lava, and passing her in" a few strides assumed command, hav>ng The Australian Peer in olose at ateodance upon him.
