WANGANUI AND WAITOTARA ROAD BOARD VALUATION ROLL.
WHEBE THE TROUBLE COMES IN. TO THB EDITOB. Sir, — Adverting to a former letter of mine on the above subject, wherein I stated some of the large properties were reduced in some instances nearly 50 per cent., and smaller properties increased in a like proportion. As a proof of the correctness of what I then stated, I adduce the following instances: — Mr Smith's property : 865 acres ; reduced from £5420 to £3160, a reduction of £2260. Mr Moore's : 7864 acres ; from £68,380 to £44,631, a reduction of £23,749. Mr W, H. "Watt: 2170 acres ; from £28;240 to £20,160, a reduction of £8080. Mr Corry : 3690 acres; from £11,992 to 5664, a reduction of £6328. Mr Robertson : 526 acres ; from £6312 to £3568, a reduction of £2744. Tottl reduction of the properties of the five wardens, £43,161. Increases : — Late Mr Nicol's property : 60 acres ; increased from £60 to £128. Mr Bell's: liacres; increased from £24 to £48. Mr Campbell : 1 acre ; increased from £16 to £32 ; Mr Riordan : 12£ acres ; from £150 to £326. Mr Dillon : 73 acres ; from £292 to £511. Mr Roots : 12 acres ; from £480 to £640, or an average of nearly 100 per cent, increase, Many more instances of a similar character might be shown — and it, behoves the small.ratepayers to look after their own interests. Now, sir, what becomes of the statement of a person who interrupted me while in conversation with gentlemen in the public street-, and with an oath upon his lips accused me of making false statements, and of impertinence because I ventured to take, the part of the small ratepayers ? Why,""sir, I can only say the language used to characterise my action, rebuts upon himself, and might with truth be used to stigmatise bis conduct in so addressing me. — I am &c, Edward N. Liititon. June 26th, 1883. .
Sib. — Would you favour me by publishing these few lines in your valuable paper upon the unfair rating of my property at Springvale. As you will see by the decision of the Court, all excepting myself 'in Springvale could get the value of their land reduced to £40 per acre, while they would not reduce mine below the '£60 per acre which some kind friend was good enough to put on as they know I am no scholar, I would gladly accept of the £60 per acre, without the 10 par cent added, if they will give it ine for the land. — I am, etc., James Barnes, Springvale. June 26, 1883.
