The New Zealand Shipping Company hare received the following message •• — 'Jjondon jtelegrams of Saturday, report sailing of the Waitara for your port, and Hurunui for Otago. To-day we are cabled ,that the Waitara •has; been 1 in collision and si"ik by the Bfuiunui. Twenty-fire lires were lost. The latter vessel put back to discharge and dock. Lateb. Mr Gibbs, of the New Zealand Shipping Company, has received a cable advice of the collision of the Waitara ,and Hurunui, of tbe saving of which be had rpcoived a cable dated June 21. The. "Waitara sank. Sixteen of her passengers arid crew wei'e saved, in'clui^ng the master, chief- officer, -and 'apprentice Woiseley. Twenfcy-fiveJ of the passsngejsand crew, with apprtn* tioe Cotterill, were drowned- The Hu;anui..put baok,' . and , will have to disohargei and dock. She .was bound for Port. Ghalmers; with a fall cargo.' The Waitara was for Wellington, also with a full cargo. ■ It is not known who • the officers were, as, since the establishment of the line of steamers, changes have been very frequent.
