SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The usual monthly meeting of the Wanganui School Committee took' place veaterday afternoon. Present — Messrs; Drew (Chairman), Treadwell, Barns, and A. Laird. . . .
In tho absence of .Mr J. J. Crawford, the secretarial duties were undertaken by Mr Chaplm. , . . .. ... s _
Amendments to Act.— On.tbe motion " of Mr Barns, seconded by Mr Laird, it was resolved, That the report of the aub-comtuittee on amendments to the Education Act be adopted, the finding of it to bs transmitted to Mr Steward, M.H.R. ■•- •
; . Deputation. - The members 'of' the last deputation to the Education ■Board-» gave in their report.
Attendance Returns. — The following returns were received for the past month : — Girls High School : Average daijv 1 attendance, 237; highest on anyhalf'day, 261. lufant School : Average daily attendance, 237 ; highest, 258 ; children under five years, 19 boys and 9 girls ; totel, 28. St. John's : Average daily attendance, 45. There were no returns sent in. from the Boys High School.
Diiill. — A letter was received from • Mr Battle complaining of excessive drill ' in the Boys High School.— The visiting committee were instructed to inquire into the matter, and fix proper hours for drill. V .
Visiting Committee. — Messrs Eyre and Treadwell wore appointed the visiting committee for the ensuiug month. Caretaker. — It was decided to adver-. tise for applications tor the post of caretaker, the duties of tho offloe to be specified.
Music. — The visiting committee was instructed to inquire into complaints which had been made as to the excessive band-playing at the Boya High School, and in the meantime to* stop the music during school hours.
Secondary Subjects.— The Chair-, man reported (hat some pareuts had complained to him that they were not; satisfied with the teaching of the secondary subiouls. — -The Committee, in the fear lest this should be founded on fact, and that tha schools should suffer accordingly, instructed the visiting committee particularly to inquire iuto (ha matter, and report to the next meeting.
Accounts. — Sundry accounts wore passed in- payment. The meeting then adjourned until Thursday, the 2Sth instant, at 4 p.m.
