* : " ' WANGANUI v. PALMEESTON. ' The long- talked of match between the Wanganui and Palmerston North Cricket Clubs came off yesterday at Palmerston, and resulted, as will be seen from the scores, in a 'victory for' Wanganui by three wickets. The contest was a good one ; , and genuine oricket was shown on both sides. The chief ■ feature of the match was Sunley's bowling for the victorious team.- In the first innings he cleaned bowed' seven of the Palmerston men. Cross in his • second innings put together the big score of 44, not out, in which, however, he gavetwo chances.' None of- the :Palmerstori men:inade any stand, but Isaac Salmon's play all round was good, taking Eix' wickets in the first inniiigs,- ; and. four in the unfinished second. Play commenced at a quarter past 10 o'clock, and at 12.30 an adjournment was made to 'Fenton's Eoyal Hotel for lunch. The chair w»s filled by Mr McNeiil, president of the Pulmerston Club, having on his right Mr Macquarie,- captain of the Palmerston team, and on his left Mr Cross, captain of the Wnngantu team. Thevicechair was filled by Mr G. M. Snelson The usual loyal toasts, and health and prosperity to' the contending clubs, were duly proposed and .cordially honoured. Play was then resumed, and lasted till 4 o'clock. The Wauganui men returned horne 1 last night, after an enjoyable and very friendly day's cricket. Mr Thos. Association. — As will be seen from the.report in auothcr column, a donation list has boon opened in order to pay off tho debt of £340 upon this valuable public body. T.e>'i>ehs pok GiiAVEt. — A speciul meeting of tho Borough Council was held on Wodncsday morning for tho purpose of inspecting samples of gravel, and opening tenders for a supply for two years from the Ist of January next. There were present His Worship Clio Mayor, Crs Nathan, Notman,' Jones, Spurdle, Ward, Kichards, Crawford. The following tenders were received i — Scally, unscreened, 2s Id per yard ; screened, 2s 3d ; Flannary, 3s 6d and ■Is Gd ; Kcgan, 3s 4d and 3s 4d ; Brogan 3s and 3s 6d ; O'Hara 2s lOd and 3s lOd ; Austin, 2s (id and 3s 4d : O'Leary 2s 4cl and 2s. Mr Scully's tender was accepted.
