TURAKINA.
.. ■ * (fkom oub ovrs cohbespondent.) TURAKINA, NOV. 7. The English Church concert passed off very successfully, and has resulted hi a net profit of a little over £20. We had two amatpurs from Wauganui, a lady and gentleman, both of whom pleased the audience very much. Miss Jessie Cameron presided at the piano, and the accompaniments were played in that lady's usual Roods tyle. Miss Kuox and Messrs Burcham and Sanson contributed songs, which were well received and greatly appreciated, A number of glees by a local glee company were rendered with feeling and good effect, and, taking everything into consideration, it may be' considered one of the best concerts we have yet had here. Tenders are called for. the erection of an Euglish Church. I have seen the list of subscriptions, which amounts to nearly £203. The English Church people here are going to work in an earnest and proper spirit, ami are succeeding even far beyond their expectations. Tho Sunday Scho lhasnowaroll of 50 scholars, aud there is an efficient staff of teachers. A very pretty site has been selected for the church building, and I trust within a few weeks to send you an account of the opening services. Last week wo had some mild excitement from a Maori row, which was caused by one Maori iuiponnc'iug another's sheep oif some disputed laud. The air was thick with rumours anent a great fight, and we even got details of those with shot wounds. I believe, however, that there was not much more than a tussle among the partisans of the interested ones. It will, however, bo further v fought out before the Besident Magistrate. Harry Power ami company gave us a night's entertainment on Saturday. He had a very fair bouse. His views were very good indeed, especially tho statues, and his remarks and songs kept the house thoroughly nmns-d. Our viver has beon full of whitebait lately, one shoal of them fully half a mile long was seen last week, and the people here aro having an agrcoablo chauge of diet. Tho \yaugivnui fishermen used to oome out hwie with fish, but they have quite deserted us of lato.
