REPLY TO "SOUKAR."

TO THE EDITOE. I Sir, — The letter in, this morning's Ohrokiole, together with Mr Pollock's effusion in the Herald of this evening, are both penned with such a Btrairi of. virtuous indignation that one has either to believe Mr " Soukar " to be a muchinjured man, an artist, or a fooll ' ,'Mr "Soukar" is irate at being termed ! "a" bookmaker." What' constitutes a bbok'inaker? " Soukar " ' evidently "draws some imaginary line between his' position and that of a bookmaker. The distinction, however, is so fine that it requires a careful definition. As regards Mr Hately's handicapping, " Soukar's,"'. wrath was kiudledatthe weight allotted' to Hippodamia in the Cvp — scratching her at once— thinking he could afford to give his indignation an airing, as 'he made confident he could win with Fishwoman. As a. .fact had ' Hippodamia started in the Cup she could have won comfortably in the time taken- by Tallyho." Well did Mr "Soukar" knbw this, but hoped the step he had, taken in scratching her, together with Jhis Sporting criticisms reflecting iph the injustice of the weight allotted tb'h'er, would have the effect of reducing Jher weight for the forthcoming race's. As to the handicapping of Hipporina in the Consolation, fta r Pollock knows full-well had it been worth his while to hayte started her nothing could hßve«iived with her for that distance, despite her' Bst 101 b, Hipporina, for a mile and" a distance, being one of the i^stest animals that have ever ran on* our course. Because Mr Hately will not be led by Mr Pollock, and because Mr Hately will not handicap as Mr "Soukar" thinks he should do ; in other, words,- handicap to suit, Mr Pollock's horses, hence tho torrents of abuse heaped upon the shoulders of our thoroughly honourable and. painstaking handicapper.. — I am, &c., Fair Play. November 2nd.
