PATEA COUNTY COUNCIL.
The Executive Committee of ...the Patea County Council. ■ .' obmpnsjijg Messrs B. Homer (chairman),' aeorge S. Bridge, and T. W. Fareman,, transacted ordinary business oii; Wednesday, the special business for . which- a full .Council, had been convened, i having beeii first disposed of. Tie matter of the late- treasurer's accounts ■ and some other business was, considered- in fconTmittee. On the recommendation of Mr George Harden, county 1 - engineer, l it was resolved to- ask the Hawer'a County Council if.th'ey were willing to join'sa the purchase of a stone-breairiii'g'm&-chine. | A similar recommendation w,aa made to the Council nearly' three 'years ago,' but was not then .'favourably,'received. ■ 'Suggestions 'having .been made by, the hospital,, surgeon of necessary improvements '• to the ' ' bui] ding,- . I - the engineer was instructed • to .prepare at* estimate of cost by nest meeting. 'The chairman was instructed ; to . ascertain what judgments are outstanding against land in the County so that' steps' can-be taken by the Public jTrustee towards letting the same. Application is to'be made under the Koads and Bridges Construction Act for three-fourtija';. ( Qf the estimated cost of the new Manawapou Bridge, the Minister ■to be informed that the Council is" ' prepared to supply the "remaining one-fourth; The next meeting of the Council will take place on the first Wednesday in December. : -' ,' A suggestion of the Patea County, engineer, that the adjoining County should bear half the cost of procuring a stone - breaking machine, should find' favour with the Hawera County Council. There cannot be a doubt as to the neces-1 sity of good metal being placed on the Great North Road in preference to the dusty gravel hitherto in general use. The Manawapou Hill, and some others 5 formerly always bad, and during winter' even dangerous parts of the main roadV hare proved the economy of a beddinffof metal. The cost of procuring metal being heavy, it is desirable' that 'the* speediest and cheapest method of stone? cracking should be adopted. It is sug-' ; . gested that the cost and ' working ex- ' penses could be materially 'reduced byhiring the stone-breaker at a fixed rate; to cbntraetors, engaged; on road works. \ Tin badges are to he used in future for sheep dogs in. Patea County, and-; brass badges for other breeds. . -, ,
