He is in colour a rich dork bay, standing 15 hands 2 inches high, on short legs. He has capital bone, great length ; and a more muscular thoroughbred horse cannot be found in New Zealand. 1 As a 2 and 3-year-old he was ono o£ the greatest performers in the Australian colonies, and. he is related on his sire and dam's side to all the best racehorses which have appeared on the turf during the past seven years. From thoroughbred or well-bred marcs lie must produce racehorses, hurdlehorses, or steeplechasers ; and from ordinary marcs should have grand hacks and carriage horses. Patchen, has a record of 2 minutes 18 seconds, and the celebrated ma.ro Lucy, by Geb. M. Patchen has a record of 2 minutes 184 seconds. Hopeful, another horse sired by Geo. M. Patehen, has a record of 2 minutes 14 J seconds. Pinole Patchen himself was a good performer, and won several purses in California in first-class company, including a purse for stallions, with a record of 2 minutes 30 seconds. Newland's Hambletonian, was a firstclass performer, is a handsome bloodlike bay horse, 11 years old, standing 16 hands high, with bone of the right description and beautiful action. In the purse won by Pinole Patchen he was only beaten by h*lf a length in the final heat, eleven heats in all having been trotted. The Grandsire of Newland's. Morphuto comefrom a great racing family, claiming some aristocratic and high-class performers as his relatives. His sire, won the Wellington Cup and ran second for the Canterbury Derby and Great Autumn Handicap. He is full brother to Lurlino and Lo Loup. The performances of these animals iv New Zealand and Australia need no comment Le Loup won the Canterbury J. C. Handicap and Cup in 1880. Opera, grand dam of Morpheus, won the Canterbury Derby in 1864. Tainbourini was also from Opera, by Towton, and won amongst other races, the Canterbury J. C. Handicap and Canterbury and Wellington Cups, besides performing successfully over hurdles. Salvage by Castaway ran second- for tho Wellington Cup last year., giving the winner a year and a pound.
