PUBLIC LIBRARY.
A meeting of the directors of the library was held last night at the Institute. Present — Messrs Gilbert King (chairman), Burnett (hon. librarian), Cross (hon. sec. and treasurer), Ballance, Powell, Nathan, Notman, and Hutchison. Entertainments.— The hon. treasurer reported that the three nights' entertainments at the theatre had realised a net profit of £44. Boxes at the Races.— The hon. treasurer also reported that the boxes at the recent race meeting had, thanks to the exertions of Messrs Hill and Poole, brought in £6 10s to the funds. Votes of Thanks.— Cordial vote of thanks were awarded to Mr Gibbs, the lessee of the theatre, for his services in connection with the recent entertainments ; and to Messrs Hill and Poole for their exertions on the library's behalf. Book Binding.— A sub-committee, consisting of Messrs Burnett, Ballance, and King, was appointed to consider and report as to the library books, which required binding. Assistant Librarian.— The directors took into consideration the charge against Mr Watkins of having written a letter to the Press upon library matters. —A letter was received from Mr Watkins explaining that he had forgotten that two years ago a resolution had been passed prohibiting him from writing letters to the newspapers. The recent matter, however, had been personal to himself, and he felt strongly upon the subject.—On the motion of Mr Ballance, seconded by Mr Nathan, Mr. Watkins's letter of explanation was accepted. Some routine business having been discussed, the directors adjourned.
