The house was owned by Mr Wm. Clapham, hotel keeper, at Ngahauranga. It appear that at 6 o'clock Mr August left the place for the puipose of loading a dray with charcoal at some distance from his residence, and had just reached the vehicle when he observed that his house was on fire. He at once retraced his steps, and endeavoured with the' assistance of some friends to subdue the flames, but they 1 had gained too firm a hold on the building, and in less than half-an-hour it was razed to the ground. The efforts to save the furniture were also unsuccessful. The house was insured, but the amount has not transpired. CHBISTCHUBCH. October 29. . F.
