SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
Tho usual monthly meeting of this committee took place yesterday afternoon, at Mr J. J. Crawford's oflice. Present — Messrs S. H. Drew (chairman), Barnes, Laird, Treadwell, and Crawford The minutes of the previous meeting were read ond confirmed. — On the motion of Mr Crawford, seconded by Mr Barns, it was resolved, 'Ihat it be recommended to the Board that Misses Worgan and O. Worgan be paid for the time they bave been acting in the place of Miss McNeill and Miss Paterson. — A letter wns received from Miss Helena West, pupil-teacher at the Girls' High School, stating that she would be unable to continue her duties after the sth of November next, and asking for a testimonial for past services. — It was resolved to comply with the request.— -It was further resolved, on the motion of Mr Laud, seconded by Mr Barns, That inasmuch as Miss West has resigned ou a month's notice, and fche numbers in attendance at the school are such as to justify the appointment of an assistant teaoher, tbe committee recommend that such appointment be made. — Miss Hoey was granted three months' leave of absence from Ist Nov., subject to Miss Blyth's approval. — A letter was read from Mr Halliwell, and on the motion of Mr Barns, seconded by Mr Crawford, it was resolved, That the committee recommend to the Board the reconsideration of Mr Halliwell's case, with a view to his being appointed to another school in the district. Mr Drew alone recorded his vote against this motion. — The Visiting Committee reported that everything was quiet ' and orderly at the Boys' High School, but that the W-C.'s were in a disgraceful condition. The Girls' High School and Infant School were satisfactory, but the blinds should be attended to. — Messrs Greenwood and Treadwell were appointed Visiting Committee for the month. — Messrs Drew and Crawford were appointed a committee to arrange for an entertainment to provide a prize fund. — The attendance returns for the month of September were as follows : — Boys' High School, number on roll, 267; average, 219. Girls' High School, number who attended, 282; average, 233. Infant School, number who at- ' tended, 279 ; average, 217* — The inspector applied for permission to examine the boys and girls in their standards at the Giils' High School. It was resolved that tho request bo complied with. — After transacting some other routine business, the committee adjourned.
