WANGANUI TROTTING CLUB'S SIXTH MEETING.

President, Dr Earle ; Vice-president, J. Abbot, Esq. ; committee, Messrs F. M. Betts, 0. M. Richards, T. Hammond, John Higgie, W. Kirkwood, O. H. Chivannes, F. B. Huff, J. Crawley, J. Chadwick, jun., James Higgie, A. Higgie, J. H. Pollock, and T. Woolley ; Judge, Dr E. 0. Earle ; starters, Messis J. Chadwick, jun., and J. H. Pollock ; clerk of the scales, Mr F. M. Betts; clerk of the course, J. Higgie ; handicappers, Messrs Pollock, Chadwick, jun., and Alexander Higgie ; timekeepers, Messrs S. H. Drew and A. Kohn ; hon. sec. and treasurer, Mr Frank W. Evans. The sixth meeting of the Trotting Club came off on Saturday last upon the racecourse. The weather turned out to be nnfavourable, and the attendance in consecpence was not large, though the sport provided deserved a far larger number of visitors. The club arrangements were very good, and, notwithstanding the fact that the handicapping had prevented some of the best trotters and biggest public favourites in the district from accepting, the contests excited great interest. Mr F. W. Evans, the hon. sec. and treasurer of the club, was indefatigable in his efforts to promote the success of the meeting, and were all his brother members o£ the club to throw eo^ual energy into the matter it is certain that the really interesting sport of trotting would take a firmer root in Wanganui than in any other place in New Zealand. The full detail < of the racing are given below, and it is not necessary to refer more particularly to the even! !•. With regard to the Trial Stakes, JA '• - iiomas Woollej aid Mr Lingard entered protests against

Mr Keith's Eamblerion the ground that it had previously won a stake or match. Mr Lingard subsequently withdrew his protest, -but the whole matter is to be considered |at a club meeting upon an early date. In the race for the big money, the distance judge (Mr Crowe) ruled that all horses but Castaway were distanced, and the judge, Mr Alex. Higgie, who was acting as locum tenems for fir Earle, who had been called away to a distance on professional business, decided that no second money "was awardable. Some dispute, however, has arisen about this point, which also will hare to be investigated at a club meeting. With these exceptions the various events passed ofE smoothly. Only one refreshment booth was opened on Saturday, Mrs Broughton, :of the Provincial. Hotel; 1 having purchased the privilege for £5. Her takings must have ■ been huge, :and • would probably more than make up for the deficiencies of the two previous days', j gatherings. The Grand Stand was but scantily patronised. Messrs Hill and . l Poole had one totalisator on the ground, ' and, despite the limited attendance, about£soo was passed through the instrument. The net takings at the gates, after deducting expenses, were £14 16s, and, as the club's reserve was £15 when' the privileges were put up for sale, its officials may be congratulated on having made a ' . very near estimate. Castaway made the most of his start, but Wakatu was overtaking him very rapidly, and at the end of the first mile was only 7isec behind Castaway. ' ■ At 1^- miles Powell pushed his mare beyond her pace and she broke and lost fully five seconds; - -Speculation was then about 200 yards behind Castaway. The ; other pair, Bambler and Jack, going along steadily about 400 yards behind the first horse. On passing the stand the second time Wakatu had again got within five' seconds of Castaway, and the race looked a moral for the Kelson mare, but just past the stand she bxoke again, and Ohavannos got another long lead, which he kept till the finish. Speculation, who profited by Wakatu's repeated breaking, finished 23 seconds behind the winner. The distance judge reported all horses distanced except Castaway. This decisicm was objected to by the rider of Speculation, and the matter, was left in hands of the committee MrChavennes's victory on Castaway was

a very popular, one, and the backers of Wakata were much disappointed, but it Was quite evident that had her rider been not quite" so anxious she would have won easily, as she has undoubtedly more/pace than the winner.' This " was shown in the Harness Race, w.here she beat' Castaway very easily, and gave him three seconds start. The time for the winner for the three miles was 9min .
