IMPORTANT ALTERATIONS IN THE MINISTERIAL PROGRAMME.

. . ♦ The Evening Post, of the 16th instant, gives the following as coming from trustworthy sources : — The Lical Publio Works Bill, which was to mitigate the evils resulting from the abolition of the subsidies, is to be abandoned, and it is proposed now to pay six months'subsidies, so far as possible out of the Land Fund, the amount thus accruing being distributed pro rata amongst the various districts. The Eating Act 1876 Amendmeut Bill, giving local bodies additional rating powers, which bill, to a great extent, depended upon the passing of the other measures, will most likely be dropped' also. With regard to the close of the session, rumour had it that the prorogation would take place on Friday next, and no. doubt Ministers, as well as the House generally, would rejoice at such a prospect ; but there is really no chance of this coming to pass. The Public Works Estimates will; be commenced this evening if the adjourned debate on the subject of the Jkailway Commission is closed or permitted to drop, and they will be pushed forward as vigorously as possible. These being disposed of y there remains only a few other absolutely essential measures to be discussed, and we have reason to think we may safely predict 'the prorogation some time' next week. |_The New. Zealand Times of the 17th says it is " authorised to state that there is no truth .whatever in the bundle of canards so industriously propagated." The Evening Post of the same date does not venture to contradict the Times, and so the matter remains.]
