August 16. It was rumoured in the lobbies this morning that the Government inttnded to abandon several of their financial measures, and pass the remaining estimates and a few essential measures. It is understood that the House will probably prorogue. sqmetiine .next week. It is stated that 'Horace Basting's will be a candidate for the seat rendered vacant by the death of the late Mr Ireland ; .also th it Mv Rees will contest the seat in the Grey interest; The Hinemoa sailed th's afternoon for Lyttelton, with the' remains of the late Mr Ireland, M.H.K.., and a few memb.erg of the Hp,uge. ■ : • ' -' • ' ■ It is stated on good authority that several parties of men now atTerawhiti, 13 or 14 miles from Wellington, golddigging, are earning wages at the rate of 5s and 6s per day, although without proper sluicing appliances. The Government have received official information that the rush jft~'£ae Qkarito gold-diggings should be discouraged, as it is being overdone. Jt js useless for men to go there without moans, as deep-sinking and tunnelling are necessary before gold can be got. ' The Oarterton Hailway i 3 now open as far as Carterton for goods traffic. A sharp shock of earthquake, ,was felt here at 9 o'clock this morning.
