AUCKLAND.
August 11. A young man named Smith, aged 17, a recent arrival from Wellington, was arrested for rape on a child 7 years of age. William Smith, avresfod for issuing valueless cheques, was remanded. Mr George, who appeared for the prisoner, said bo was of a high English family, and would shortly receive an instalment of £2000. Prisoner, wlio seemed to feel his position acutely, alleged ho was heir to a large estate worth ±!20,000. The German Consul intends to transmit a report to the German Admiralty as to the facilities of Auckland for a coaling station. The Lldools, barquenline, has arrived from the Islands, and reports speaking the cutler Sovereign of the Sea, from Karotonga, dismasted, on the coast. The barquentine supplied her with-provi-sions, but owing to heavy weather could not Z'endor her further assistance.
