August 9. Several masked men shot at Mr Boyd, the Crown Solicitor, and his two sons yesterday, at Kilkenny. Boyd is dying, and- one of the sons is in a precarious state ; the other is slightly wounded. • Mr Gladstone lias gone to Windsor, as the guest of the Queen. The .National Bank of Now Zealand pays a dividend of 3 per cent for the half-year. Accounts of the hop crop are less favourable, owing to the vines being partially damaged by excessive rains. .August 10. Sir Hercules Eobinson returns to England before proceeding to, the Cape ns Governor. Mr Boyd's son has died from the effects of the wounds received in the attack by ; the masked mon at Kilkenny. Several arrests have been made in the neighbourhood of the outrage in conse« quonce of the murder. In the House of Commons to-day, the. Marquis of Harrington, Secretary of Slate for India, replying to certain remarks which, had been made regarding the evacuation ot Cabul, defended the withdrawal of the British from that city. He said it was not now of- any politicalimportance that troops- should remain there, and G-ene'ral Stewart Had fully concurred in the proposal to remove them. • • • .
