SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
4 Thtjbsday, 20xn May. Tho regular monthly meeting of tho Wanganui School Committee was held at Mr Crawford's offices last evening. Present — Messrs Notmnn (chairman), Barns, Willis, Lnird, Low, and Drew. The minutes of previous ordinary and special meetings were read and con* firmed. ATTENDANCE BOLL. Tho Chairman read the attendance reports o£ tho schools at the end of April, as follows : — On Eoll. Avoi'iigo. Boys' High School ... 253 20G Girls' 1-litfh School ... 257 224 Infant School 431 30S Totals 971 738 SCREEN. Messrs Willis and Laird reported that the damask screen put up in the Boys' School to separate Blr Lock's division from the rest of tho school, was very unsuitable, and would have to be replaced by baizo. The consideration of tho matter was held over till next mooting. DRAINS. Mr Laird reported that there waa a 9-inch tile drain laid through tho iioys' High School property, sufficient to carry off nil the surface water, but the tiles seemed to have been badly laid. After some conversation, tho Secretary was instructed to write to the Board on the subject, stating that, although a fall of 4 feet had been allowed for, the drain does not seem to run properly. 11EP0UT OF VISITING COMMITTEE. Mr Barns reported that he bad visited the schools, and everything seemed to be going on satisfactorily. Miss Blytho had complained of the cold, and coal was subsequently supplied for building fires. Afterwards she had suffered just as much from smoke. Cowls had since been ordered for tho chimney tops. Mr Barns was much pleased with the improvement noticeable in the Infant School. The school, however, was only swept out twice a-weck. It was resolved, That in future the school bo swept out daily. DRAWING MASTER. Mr Trevitliick applied for the applied for tho appointment of drawing master to the High Schools. On the motion of Mr Willis, it was resolved, That the Board be requested to call for applications for tho appointment of a drawing master for the High Schools. TRUANT INSPECTOR. Letter from Mr Kells, resigning his appointment as truant inspector. Several members said they thought tho appointment was a very important ono. The appointment of a successor to Mr Kells was left in the hands of tho chairman. PUPIL TEACHERS. Mr Laird moved the motion, of which he had previously given notice, That the Board be requested to arrange for the education of the pupil teachers under one head, so that a uniform syßtem should be taught. He thought it desirable that all the pupil teachers, male and female, should be placed under one head, and that a master, and bo taught after ordinary school hours. At present he was of opinion that pupil teachers had not a fair opportunity of qualifying themselves. Mr Barns seconded the motion 2 ]ro forma. The Chairman -was of opinion that the motion rather contravened Clause 5 of the regulations of the Board. After some discussion the question was put to the meeting, Messrs Laird, Low, and Willis voting for it, and none of the members against. The motion was therefore carried. APPOINTMENT OF ASSISrANT MISTRESS. Applications for the post of assistant mistress at the Girls' High School were received from the following ladies : — Misses J. Cornfoot, Hnwera ; Flora McPhee, Foxton ; Alice Reeve, lvaugitikei; E. A. McNeill, Wellington ; Johanna Anderson, Auckland ; Kate Verdon, Wauganui ; Mrs lYra. Jackson, Wanganui ; Emma Cooper, Mosstown School, Wanganui (application conditional ou an increase on the salary offered). The Chairman complimented tho Committee on tho excellence of the applications. After some considerable time had been spent in carefully going through tho testimonials of the several applicants, all the members of Committee stating that they felt very groat difficulty in making a selection whore all appeared to be so well qualified for the post, it was llesolved, That Miss McNeill be recommended to the Education Board for the appointment of assistant mistress to the Girls' High School. ACCOUNTS. A number of accounts were passed for payment. girls' school ground. A deputation wa3 appointed to wait on the Borough Council with a request that some necessary tools bo supplied for the use of the prisoners working on Girls' School ground. secretary's salary. A bonus of £5, as addition to salary, was granted to the Secretary, in recognition of his valuable services, and placing a room at the disposal of the Committee for their meetings. RE VACANCY IN THE COMMITTEE. Mr Currio was appointed a member of Committee in the room of Mr Eeavcn, resigned. The meeting adjourned at 11 o'clock.
