May 7. The Channel Squadron has returned from its cruise in search of the missing training ship Atlanta. The mission has proved entirely fruitless. The Daily News, in a leading article today, states that the English Cabinet has issued a circular despatch to the Great Powers inviting them to co-operate with the British Government in enforcing a strict execution of the Treaty of Berlin, where the same has been so far unfulfilled in regard to internal reforms in Turkey, and the restitution of the Turko-Greek frontier. The total quantity of wheat afloat for Great Britain is 1,950,000 quarters. Best Australian beef tallow, 32s Od, best mutton, 345. Sydney copra, £17. At the wool sales to-day 8500 bales were offered, making a total of 164,400 bales catalogued since the opening. To day's auction was marked by a slightly improved tone. There is a fair demand for most descriptions of hides. The Board of Trade returns of imports and exports for the last few months show a decided improvement. Sir William Vernon Harcourt, who was appointed Home Secretary in the new Ministry, has been defeated in seeking re^ election for Oxford. The question of meat importation is seriously occupying public attention. A prospectus ha 3 been issued of a Colonial Fresh Meat Company, with a capital of £3,000,000.
