LICENSING COURT.

(Before E. Hardcastle, R.M., John Duthie, John Morgan, James Moore, Licensing Commissioners.) John Selkirk Oapstiek applied for a license for the Railway Hotel. There were no objections. ' . Sub-Inspector Goodall stated that this house hud been increased, since last Licensing' Court, by the addition of eleven bedrooms ; the old part of the house required rebuilding, the rooms being very low; believed the house was originally a stable ; it was noiv in very good condition. l Mr Capstick said he had nothing to urge in' favour of the application ; he would leave it in their iiauds. The Bench reserved decision for a week*^.- . • Hugh Ross, by Mr Barnicoat, applied for a license for th« Provincial Hotel. Mr Barnicoat stated that his friend Mr Hutchison appeared for Mr Broughton, who applied for a renewal of the license he held for this house, in case Mr Roes' application should le refused. The reason of the two applications " being made was that the negotiations between Messrs Broughton and Koss were not concluded in time for Mr Ross to obtain a temporary transfer before the sitting of the Court. Mr Hardcastle observed that this appeared to b8 a repetition of an attempt which had been made in a previous instance in that Court— an attempt by certain parties to have two strings to their bow. Those who came making these applications should be in a position to trust to the merits of their case, and be prepared to stand or fall by their applioacation. Mr Hutchison stated that the circumstances did not warrant Mr Hardcastle'i remarks. There was no attempt at having two strings to a bow. The arrangements for the purchase of the business were but just completed. There had been no time to give a temporary transfer, and it would have been unwise in bis client to have run the risk of losing the license altogether, which, had he failed to apply for a renewal, would have been the case, bad Mr Ross' application teen refused. The Bench deferred their decision. (After a brief retirements a laterstege of the proceedings, the application was
