The Wanganui Chronicle. AND PATEA-RANGITIKEI ADVERTISER. "NULLA DIES SINE LINEA." TUESDAY, JUNE 19th, 1877.

On several occasions previously we have represented, on behalf of the ratepayers, the claims of those who held insurance policies against loss by fire, to have the rates of premium reduced proportionately to the diminshed risk through, the instrumentality of an abundant supply of water, an effective fire brigade, with all such necessary appliances as hydrants, hose. &c, &c. By an Auckland telegram which appeared yesterday morning, we see that the Auckland Eire Brigade and the City Council, have held a consultation with the insurance agents in order to obtaiu a similar reduction to those advocated and enumerated by us in a previous reference to this topic. The reply made by the manager of the New Zealand Insurance Compauy, does not appear to have been altogether satisfactory, as it was stated therein that increased facilities for tbe suppressing of fire would have to be arranged by the Borough before the desired reduction could be favourably considered. But in Auckland it seems that the Insurance Companies, and the Borough Council work together, in their efforts to maintain the efficiency of tbe fire brigade, more harmoniously than has hitherto been the case in Wanganui, But this is not. the phase of the question which we want to point out most prominently. There is no doubt, as demonstrated in a marked and satisfactory manner at the fire on Taupo Quay some mouths ago, that our water supply, fire brigade, and general appliances, are equal to any emergency, and that the risks of fire are thereby essentially decreased. We see that the Standard Company has been the first to move iu the direction pointed out by us some months ago. The other companies should lose no time in following suit, as under the altered circumstances their clients are honestly entitled to expect a concession of the nature indicated, and by which eventually the insurance companies .will be the gainers.
