AUCKLAND.
June 16. The Zealandia arrived this morning with the English and American mails. She left Frisco on the 23rd May, Californian time, and omitted calling at Kandavau. Passengers for New Zealand— H. A. Duff, E. Graham, C. H. Denaner, O'lNeill, Allan, Mrs Murdoch, and nine in the steerage. The schooner Coronet has brought the machinery for a new copra oil mill. Some o£ the principal merchants have formed an association to work the venture. The Fire Brigade and City Council held a consultation with insurance agents re the reduction of insurance rates in view of new water supply. Mv Pierce, Manager of the New Zealand Co., said that, before reducing the rates, the Borough must increase the facilities for suppressing fire, in the shape of hose and hydrants at convenient points, and also reels and 1,000 feet of hose. The Mayor said that the Council desired to cooperate, on the condition that the original understanding be carried out, and that all expenses and outlay up to £100 be jointly paid by the Council aud Insurance Companies. The Mayor promised, if necessary, to telegraph for 1,000 feet of hose.
