LOCAL AND GENERAL

The Show. — By advertisement in our columns it will be seen that all the principal merchants and shopkeepers have agreed to close at 1 p.m. on the day of the Wanganui A. & P. Association’s show, which should thus be visited by a great number of people who otherwise would be debarred from attending through business engagements. We anticipate a capital exposition, to the attainment of which desirable consummation all the indispensable elements are at present favourable. A large influx of visitors to town is expected on that occasion. Picnic. — A social gathering on an unprecedentedly extensive scale is announced to come off on the Prince of Wales Birthday. We refer to the Wesleyan picnic and tea meeting, the proceeds from which will be devoted towards augmenting the building fund of the new Wesleyan Church on the River Bank. The preparations that are being made must ensure the affair being a most successful and enjoyable reunion. Rinkomania. — The trip to Marton and Bulls was satisfactory both in a pecuniary and social sense. At both places the parties who assembled as spectators or as participators in the amusement, were numerous, and appeared thoroughly to enjoy themselves. In fact, two more successful entertainments have not before taken place in the district. We learn that the gross pecuniary proceeds amounted to £21 5s 6d.
