Chronicle Office, May 10. Trade, during the past month, has been of a uniform dulness, little business and still less speculation have been its chief characteristic. The price of stock has not decreased, and that of sheep has, if anything, taken a firmer tone. Several freights of cattle have recently left Wanganui and more are engaged for. Good beef mav be quoted from 22s 6d to 25s per lOOlbs, mutton being 8s to 12s 6d in the same quantity. Butter, fresh, is firm at 10d ; and salt butter is likely to increase in value, at present 8d may betaken as a fair average. Wholesale merchants hold full stocks of general commodities ; the arrival of the Lady Darling with a large cargo from Melbourne, having supplied any deficiences left by the regular coastwise trade. The following are the quotations of the more important articles : Adelaide flour (full supply) first-class brands, £lB to £2O; Colonial, £l6 10s to £l7 ; Martell’s brandy (in case) £3 ; geneva, JDKL, full sizes, 70s to 80s; beer (British) in hhds, £7 ; Blood’s hot stout, 14s to 14s 6d ; Candles, 3s 4d to 3s sd.
