THE NATIVE WAR.
THE PATEA. Colonel Lyon’s expedition up the Patea river returned on Friday last, after a five days’ excursion into the interior. On their eturn they encountered a small party of hree young men, an old man, and an old woman, who were evidently but the stragglers of a larger party. The Ngatiporous killed the whole party with the exception of one of the men who escaped and alarmed the main body. They had been engaged in digging potatoes in some native cultivations near the river, and were, in all probability, a foraging party in search of food, which, all accounts go to prove, is rather scarce with the natives at present. On Friday a body of Wanganui natives left for Patea.
