LAMENTABLE HUNTING ACCIDENT LOSS OF SIX LIVES.

A sad fatality attended the meeting of the York and Ainsty foxhonds on Thursday, 4th February. The hounds met at 11 o’clock at Stainley-house near Ripley A fox was soon found, and it crossed the river Ore, a tributary of the Ouse, which runs through York to the Humber. A number of the gentlemen of the hunt, with the whipper-in of the hounds, proceeded to cross the river with their horses in a boat. Whilst crossing the river, one of the horses began to plunge, and the horse of Sir Charles Slingsby, the master of the hounds, jumped out of the boat, by which it was capsized. Both men and horses were thown into the river. The spectators on the bank took prompt measures to rescue them. Those who could swim plunged in, whilst others formed lines of whips tied together, and threw them within reach of the drowning men. Several beams of wood which lay scattered about were also launched on the stream. Those who were drowned were Sir Charles Slingsby, Mr E. Lloyd, of Lingcroft, near York, Edmuned Robinson, of York, Mr Orvis (the huntsman), and two boatmen. Nine out of the eleven horses shared the same fate. Five of the party got into the boat and were saved, and two others swam out.
