THE PROGRESS OF THE PRINCE. His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh landed on Monday at Port Chalmers, and was enthusiastically received at Dunedin. Twenty thousand people turned out. H.R.H. visited the theatre in the evening. The town was brilliantly illuminated. On Tuesday morning he held a levee ; but it was not largely attended. In the afternoon he attended the Caledonian Gathering, at which 5000 people were present. By request one competitor named Brown, a brother of the Queen’s favourite attendant, was present. The Duke’s piper played in the evening at the ball. Nearly 400 persons were present. He opened the ball with Mrs Macandrew. The Governor danced with Mrs Birch. Afterwards the Royal piper was introduced, when the Duke danced a reel with Mrs Robertson. At supper he expressed himself greatly pleased with his reception. He danced another reel and retired. The town was again illuminated. On Wednesday the Duke drove to the Races.
