TELEGRAPHIC NEWS.
Napier, Monday. Colonel Whitmore has arrived and divided his force into two columns, which will march to Manngapowhato(N. W. of Waikare Moana). The first column, consisting of 150 Europeans and 300 Arawas proceed up the Rangitaiki River, then via Tawaroa, Ahikereru and Ruatahuna. The other column, under Lieut.-Colonels St. John and Fraser, with 300 Europeans and 150 Ngatipukeko proceed up the Whakatane and Wai moana valleys. Fifty cavalry and 100 Ngatitu Wharetoa will take up a position on Upper Rangitaiki. A third column, consisting of 200 Europeans and 250 natives, under Major Herrick, are assembling at Wairoa, towards the same point. Dunedin, Friday. The Provincial Council opened yesterday. Mr Vogel's mission to Auckland, in reference to the Southern Trunk Railway, i 3 said to have been successful, and an ordinance will be brought in to enable the work to be carried on. Measures for the construction of a railway to Port Chalmers, a w 7 et dock at Oamaru, and harbour accommodation at Waikouati, promised. The Government, it is said, will not resign till after the Duke’s visit.
