Wanganui Chronicle. and TURAKINA X RANGITIKEI MESSENGER. TUESDAY, 27th APRIL, 1869.

The ides of March are past, but the first of June is coming, and preparation must be made for it. The ship of state, which has, for the past nine or ten months, been staggering along, with a rather incapable crew, and very much strained in her timbers, is having sail shortened as the port approaches. We hear of one member of the crew, who had a sinecure office created for him, under the semblance of which he might help—in reality, he has hindered —the prospects of the Government, being about to drop astern. Mr Haughton, who devoted his energies to virulent newspaper writing and doing ministerial chores generally, has resigned his office for which there was never any use. and proceeds to Otago forthwith. Other objectionable persons —reputed Jonahs —will, no doubt, share a similar fate and be pitched over-board. All danger, the Gazette announces, is over in the district of Wellington—happy district, looking blue, which some people may mistake for good weather. We shall see.
