VOLUNTEER PRIZE-FIRING AT THE SOUTH.

The District Prize Firing, at Dunedin, for the current year is now finished, the highest sooi’e being 57. In the Rifle Association match, at Dunedin, on the 30th, for the Mason’s cup. Grant and Tresider both got 47 out of a possible CO. For the Association medel, Miller scored 50 ; Grant and Marshall 49 out of a possible 00. The firing fcr the colonial prize was commenced with favourable weather and a large attendance of spectators. Of the series' for 400, 500, and 600 yards, Goldie, of the Port Chalmers Naval Brigade, won the first prize of £SO with 48 points ; Tresider, of the Dunedin City Guards, the second of £25 with 48 points ; Captain McFarlane, of the Dunedin Artillery, the third of £ls with 47 points ; and Cameron, of No 3, Canterbury Rifles, the fourth of £lO with 46 points. The firing for the series at 200, 500, and 600 yards was only completed at the two latter ranges, leaving the 200 yards to be fired at next day. The leading scores were—McGregor, Dunedin, 30 points ; Clode, Riverton, 27points ; and Dixon, Canterbury, and Whales, Dunedin, each 23 points. On the second day of the rifle match—distances, 200, 500, and 600 yards—the first prize, £2O, was won by McGregor, of Otago, by a score of 41. The second, £ls, was won by Wales, of Otago, score, 3S. The third, by Clode, of Riverton, score, 35. The fourth, by Robertson, of Otago, score, 35.

At the long range match no prize could be won unless thirty points were obtained. A strong wind interfered with the shooting. The following were the scores made : —McFarlane, Otago, 29 ; Grant, Otago, 26 ; Fisher, Westland, 25 ; Tresseder, Otago, 25.

The day was miserable—a strong southwest gale was blowing across the range. It was almost impoasible to see the targets.
