Firing for Provincial Government Prizes, Wanganui aid Bangitikei Districts. Provincial Secretary’s Office, Wellington, 2nd Feb., 1864. THE Superintendent directs the following Rules and Regulations, respecting the Firing for the Prices given by the Provincial Government, in the Districts of Wanganui and Rangitikei,j to be published for general information. J. W)ODWARU^ Acting Provincial Secretary. RULES AND REGULATIONS respecting the Firing for Prices given in the Districts of Wanganui and Rangitikei. 1. The following will be the Prices given for each District— Wanganui District, 1 Ist Prize, 2ml do 3rd do «Sl2 £8 £5Total .... £25 Ist Prize, Jg.l2 Rangitikei District, < 2nd do £8 (3rd do £5 Total ... £25 Time and Place of Firing. 2., The firing to take place at such hours and places as the Officers commanding the different Companies may deem convenient, commencing on Monday, 14th March, 1864, Should the weather prove unfavourable at any time appointed, the firing may be postponed at the discretion of the Officer commanding the Company, pro«vided that the Firing for each Company is completed on or before Thursday, April 14th, 1864. Who eligible to compete, and names to be sent in.

The Militia and Volunteers, and all intending competitors, to| send in their names to the different commanders of com* panies on or before the 28th February 1864, after which no one will be allowed to enter. List of persona Firing. 4. A list, giving each competitor a number only, to be given to the Officer, and Marker ; another list to be made out with each competitor’s name and corresponding number on it to be kept by the Officer stationed nt the spot where the competitors fire from. Competitors absenting themselves. 5. Should any competitor absent himself without leave, when his turn comes to fire he is to forfeit his chance, and a shot is to be fired in the air, (which the marker will score as a miss) in order to keep the members on the list correct. Arnts and Ammunition to be used. 6. Government Rifles and Ammunition. m - . Mode of Firing. 7. “ Ilythe” position. 8. Distances at which to fire— namely, 100, 200, and 400 yards. No. of rounds at each distance —-5. Targets to be used at the several distances—Two regulation size targets 6 by 2 ft. each, or one 6 by 4 ft., having a ceutre 2 ft. in diameter and a bull’s eye 8 in. Value of Points. —Bull’s eye, 3 ; Centre, 2 ; Outer, 1 ; Hits, 1. Ties. 9. Ties to fire five rounds at one Target 6x2 feet at 300 yards’ range. Ring Shots. 10. Competitors to have the benefit of any shot on the ring. Richochets. | 11. Any shots which touch the ground j before hitting the . Target (ricochets) to be ! noted R in the column of misses. Score. 12. All hits to count according to where the bullet first strikes the target. Award of Score. 13. All differences as to points, etc., to be decided by the Officer Commanding the Company before any returns of the firing are finally made up. Officers. 14. Officers commanding Companies to be on the ground ; one Officer to be appointed to call the names of competitors at the place of firing, a"Ud another to remain near the Target. Marker. 15. A marker to be appointed by the Officer commanding the Company, who will be under the Officer appointed to remain near the Target. Returns of Firing. 16. A return of the names of all competitors with the number of points scored by each to be forwarded to the Officer Commanding Militia and Volunteers, .according to forms (which will be sent to the different Captains of Companies) as soon as possible after the firing has ceased. 16. The attention of Officers commanding Companies is particularly ealled to the following rules to [prevent accident: —• Caution against Accidents. No competitor is to cap or cock his rifle before coming to the spot from which he is to fire. No competitor is to let the cock of his rifle down when an unexplodod cap is on the nipple, but|to keepit atjhalf cock.
