OTAGO. •The escort of the 26th ulfc. brought down 16,569 ozs. With reference to the appearance of pleuro-pneumonia in Otago, the TeJegmph of the 18th states :—“ It is with much regret that we learn that a lot of 234 head of cattle, recentlyjimported from Twofold Bay, were found to be diseased with pleuro-pneumonia. When news reached here last week that some tweny or thirty of these cattle were Mead, a deputation, consisting of owners of runs and gentle men connected, with the cattle trade, waited upon the Superintendent in order to communicate this unfortunate circumstance to ITis Honor. These gentlemenj were unanimous in their opinion thatj prompt action should he taken by the; Provincial Government, that the ■ herd! should bo at once destroyed, and the! neighbourhood where the cattle are now! depasturing, be proclaimed an infecteddistrict. His Honor acquiesced in the views of the so far as pro-' claiming the district infected ; and it has been resblved in Council that the district from Hamilton and Waines’ station/ to?the mouth of the Waikouaiti River, ! extending over twenty-five miles, and! from the same point to the month of the Shag River, he declared infected. It was also ordered that cattle arriving from; Twofold Bay, which had been ordered - previous to this date, should undergo a| very strict examination, and until further notice prohibiting the importation into this province of all cattle from Twofold Bay after this date (13th mst.) It is| greatly to be regretted that the precautions; in reference to the travelling of cattle 1 and their constant inspection, which have been taken by the Government of Victoria and Queensland, should have been entirely neglected in Hew South Wales. It is we believe, almost impossible that an infected animal should reach us from any Victorian port. Dr. Hector, the Otago Provincial Geologist, has again returned to Dunedin from the West Coast. The Daily limes furnishes the /following information : We are enabled to lay before our readers -a few notes of Dr. Hector’s proceedings since his last visit to Dunedin, when he returned to join his schooner at the Kakapo Lake. The schooner was got out of the Kaduka Lake without any difficulty, after being delayed for some time by bad weather. Visited Milford Souud, Bligh and George Sounds. From George Sound Dr. Hector found it was only a short distance through to the Te Anau Lake, and the highest altitude to cross in the route is about 2000 feet. The water shed is only three miles from the head of the Sound. After leaving! George Sound a terrific storm arose, supposed to be the same that devastated Melbourne ; the schooner was put-before the wind, and had to run past several inlets until they found shelter in Breaksca sound where and in Dusky Bay they speut three weeks. Here Dr. Hector fouud distinct traces of Captain Cook’s visit. Dr Hector returned before he had seen all Ire wished, but his provisions were exhausted, the menj having lived principally on fish for some time back. The doctor has succeeded in capturing Kiwis (Apteryx) of two species and also some Kakapos, or ground parrots ; one of the latter has been brought alive to town. Amongst a heap' of broken wreck cast up in Broken Cove, on the South side of Dusky Bay, they fouud the head rails and head name board of the Omen, probably washed off long ago in a storm to the H.W. of the point. Dr. Hector lias seen nothing to cause him to alter his opinion that though gold may be found
