LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.

About ten o’clock on Tuesday evening an alarm of fire was given ; when it appeared that some youths, returning from the dancing school, had seen a blaze spring up in the back room of Mr. Richards’ premises on Taupo quay. On examination it appeared that some one had effected an entrance by the back window, and, having deposited a heap of shavings and greased rags close to the wall of the back room under some shelves, had decamped after firing the pile. Shortly .afterwards it was discovered that a similar pile had burnt itself out on the floor of Messrs. ICells and Roberts’ butchers shop ; and a soldier iu their employ, who had just befoi'e been seen carrying a quantity of shavings from Mi*. Rankin’s shop, is in custody on suspicion of being the incendiary. Mr. Richardson and his family were all absent from home at the time.

The Town Board at their meeting on Monday evening, desired all the outstanding rates to be collected without delay ; and that proceedings should be taken against any persons who refused to pay.

A Ri£e-shooting match between twelve "Volunteers, and the same number of the 57th Regt., came off on Saturday. The ranges were the same as for the Government Prizes a few months back, and the Volunteers won by 33 points ; Mr. Jas. Cathi’o making the highest scoi’e, 36

points. A second match between six of each side, at 600 and 700 yds., was then shot and the Volunteers again won, though only by one point. The day was windy. A return match between men of the two services fully accoutred is talked of.
